I ride across the plains
With the lazy Rio Grande
While far away the buzzards call to me
They're calling out my name
I must keep a steady hand
Or I'll end my days beneath the old oak tree
It's a lonely road
Out among the hills
Where the only law is to ride, to eat, and kill
And I must now go
Down that sacred trail
When I hear that old familiar voice wail
Ah
Battle wounds still ache
I still walk these quiet miles
And I know the memories follow every step
The promise I will make
While the devil slowly smiles
Will join the secrets these old hills have kept
It's a lonely road
Out among the hills
Where the only law is to ride, to eat, and kill
And I must now go
Down that sacred trail
When I hear that old familiar voice wail
Ah
