It's only rocks and gravel
And sand that you could shovel
With wheel-ruts where a truck once lost its load
But in my mind
I take my time
Down ironbark road
The dark trees stand together
Committed friends forever
Through drought and bushfire
Hard times they have hoed
In furrowed bark
Their scars are stark
On ironbark road
The gentle rain is falling
A currawong is calling
Kangaroo prints beat that path I know
I watch them jump
I hear them thump
Down ironbark road
Deep breaths of gum and wattle
Of damp earth, rich and subtle
You can almost taste the ancient land below
But a pebble skip
Across the top
Is ironbark road
Washed away and winding
The old track keeps on climbing
Onto the ridge where lonely grass-trees grow
See the mountains far
From where you are
On ironbark road
Hear the ocean hummin'
Feel the west wind comin'
Watch the angry evening clouds explode
From high up on
That hill along
Ironbark road
See the colours changing
The restless ocean raging
As sunset takes back the last light it sowed
And I'm left to walk
Walk back in the dark
Down ironbark road
