I remember walking down the street
Through my neighborhood at night
I'd throw rocks to cause the bats
To dive at old streetlights
When the lights came on it was our signal
To head on back to home
And we walked those dusty streets all alone

There was no watch
No association
And our parents paid no dues
But all the neighbors knew each other, And they knew the children too
The Dogs ran loose,
And we did too- with old cars in the yard
Some folk say we're making progress
But I don't think we got so far

We're the Children of a Generation
That grew up playing in our yards
Out on big adventures
But we never traveled far.
And if we did, the phone would ring
With a neighbor on the line
We all watched out for each other
And now we're living in another time.

I remember folks around the table
Drinking coffee and playing cards
They'd just walk across the street

No cellphones, emails, text or chat but we had each other's back
