Last night on the midnight sea
Of perennial grass and oaken leaves
My newfound lover turned to me
And whispered in my ear that she could be
The one to hold me close
And loving as the Holy Ghost
But I'm a heathen I don't go to church at all
I'm damned forevermore
She took my hand we danced along
The riverside and flowing song
Of cheering crawdads clapping claws at
Minnows kissing near the willow log
That once stood weeping tall
And mighty lush but hollowed all it's
Contents out for others' sake
Then just like me now: only bound to break
Eastward breezes ebb and flow
The sea where prairie grasses grow
And leave a temporary trail
Of where we've been but not where we will go
And when we're grey and old
And don't remember what we know today
Our withered memories will live on
In the skin of this bur oak
As the decades come and pass
And fires sweep across the land
The tree in which we carved our names
Goes up in smoke and leaves nothing but ash
That washes to the sea
Or fertilizes a new leaf
There's ample opportunity for us
To live on indefinitely
Just like that the morning peaked
The sun on the horizon
We are naked of all burdens
But the existential burdens of our dreams
Despite the vast expanse
Of knowingness we cannot have
Theres solace to be found amongst the
Leaves and trees and streams and seas of grass
