Standing black against the
Yellow lemon sky
The crowd was shoving, elbowing
For a better view
I won't forget that little boy
His primal fear, that chilling noise
The Thing was near, and it kept moving
As he kept running, shadows looming
I pushed my way to reach the front
A sudden clang
From the shadows, I could see it
A chill came over me
A scream tore through
Two large, blazing, luminous eyes
Coils twisting, writhing
Reaching high
Into the sky, a nightmare theme
This terror real, not just a dream
Cries of horror, tentacles tight
The beast, bear-sized, filled me with fright
The Spiders from Mars began to appear
People screamed, hope disappeared
We ran madly, panting, then waiting
Half-fascinated terror, some still staring
A black round head bobbed in the air
With shrieks and cries of raw despair
Invisible fire rains from the sky
Searing screams as we wonder why
Death's unseen, but it leaps and it flies
The Martians' wrath, no escape, no disguise
As dusk fell I saw a few men
Walking slowly with a white flag then
To the left it fluttered, to the right it flew
A goodwill gesture so quickly misconstrued
But how soon we forget
Our lessons from the past
Suddenly, I saw a flash of light
Green smoke rising, so bright
With a loud hiss, hum and droning
I could see this shape rising
Before anyone could react
I watched fiery death leaping
From man to man
Invisible, flaming death all around
Panic and terror, no safe ground
While the stars shined brightly overhead
The Martians brought human horror
And sorrow instead
