I saw the first device last night
From Mars streaking across the sky
With its ominous green flame
Landing with a blast out of sight
I rose early to search
For what fell out of the sky
Finding it after dawn
A large hole, blue smoke rising
A fire burning at the side
To my surprise, it was large
Like a cylinder
I was astonished, standing there
In the warm morning sun
I heard its strange sound, but
Where had all the birds gone
Wait, a new sound
Suddenly there was a large bang
I jumped, my heart raced, scared
I ran down into the pit despite the heat
Watching, the lid was unscrewing
Good heavens I shouted
There's men in it
It's from Mars
Its Martians"
I ran forward to help
But the Intense heat
It was too hot
I must have looked wild
When I ran into town
The wagoner drove off quickly
The potman tried to lock me up
When I finally saw Henderson
I explained quickly
There were men trapped
We hurried back to the pit
But when we got there all we could hear
Was the sizzling sound of hot air
I picked up a stick
I poked it like a dead bear
Nothing, no sound, no movement
The Martians were dead
I felt horrible, horrible
We ran to town for help
Henderson went to the station
He sent the news to his paper
"Dead Men from Mars" was his headline
Not knowing, this was his last byline
Not knowing, we were deadly mistaken
Not knowing, the tragedy we wouldn't see
The tragedy we wouldn't see
