I remember the campfire at Delaware Inn it was the summer of '69
Mary's John was playing guitar and I was envious it wasn't mine
I didn't know it then but it didn't take long to know the night would change my life
Five years later New Year's Day my first gig and life was on the rise
That was 1974 a matinee at the infamous Pines
I made 20 bucks for the first two hours 10 more for my first reprise
I knew my world changed there and then I knew I was in the right place
I was driven anew my guitar my friend and an audience to share my space
An audience to share my space
On the long long road
On the long long road
On the long long road long road of caring
Long road of staring long road of sharing
There isn't a venue I haven't played I felt welcomed in them all
From rec rooms to campfires buses and boats churches funeral homes and malls
From bars and cars planes and trains college campuses coast to coast
You wanna talk about staying in the moment well I've stayed there more than most
On stages of giving feeling the return a spark of energy ignited to a flame
Music requires no faith no promise the reward is in the exchange yes it is now
