John Gregory Knowles - Whiskey in the Jar Lyrics

John Gregory Knowles - Whiskey in the Jar Lyrics

Mush a ring um a dur um a dah
Whack fol me daddy-oh, whack fol me daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar

As I was going over the Cork and Kerry mountains
I met with Captain Farrell and his money he was counting
I first produced my pistol and I then produced my rapier
Saying "Stand and deliver" for you are a bold deceiver

He counted out his money and it made a pretty penny
I put it in me pocket for to give it to my Jenny
She sighed and she swore she never would betray me
But the devil take the women for they never can be easy

As I lay me down for to take a little slumber
Jenny eyed me money and it filled her eyes with wonder
And so she took me pistols she filled them up with water
And sent for Captain Farrell to be ready for the slaughter

When I awoke 'twixt the hours of six and seven
Guards stood around me in numbers odd and even
I reached for me pistols alas I was mistaken
She'd filled them up with water so a prisoner I was taken

They threw me into jail without judgement or writing
For robbing Captain Farrell upon the Kerry mountains
But they didn't take me fists I knocked the sentry down
And then I left the jail that was in Killarney town

If anyone can aid me 'tis me brother in the army
But I don't know where he's stationed be it Cork or in Killarney
If ever I can find him we'll go rovin' in Killkenny
And I vow he'll treat me better than me darlin' sportin' Jenny

Now some take delight in their sportin' or their bowlin'
And others take delight in their carriages a'rollin'
But I take delight in the juice of the barley
And courting pretty lasses in the morning bright and early
