[ Featuring the Herbaceous Perennials ]
Long ago in a dream
A dream I had, I don't know what it means
A wet glove in the rain
Three more then the same one again
On the Liverpool Road
Damp socks and tingling toes
In the morning I wake
Grab a bag from the cupboard, decide what to take
On the way here this morning, I saw the day dawning
And I dropped my house keys down a drain
I called for a taxi but all that he asked me
Was about things I couldn't explain
There's a new life forming and without a warning
He'll be here before the end of the rain
And I'll stomp down the Liverpool Road again and again
Got the call at midnight
So I switched off the music and turned on the light
I jumped out of the bed
And raced through all the thoughts in my head
On my way through the town
I looked up as the rain fell down
Saw a glove on the floor
Now all along the Liverpool Road I'm looking for more
At the corner I look as I put down my foot
On a mitten left on the ground
All battered and broken, this hand-knitted token
Says something simply profound:
'I'm nothing but fabric, some string and elastic
'And you'd lose me in the Lost and Found
'But, if you pick me up, there's one less glove left hanging around'
You can say what you like
But I'm not going home tonight
In the chair by the bed
I'll stroll through all the thoughts in my head
They say the boy will be small
But that doesn't bother me at all
He will grow to be strong
So if I see another glove on the floor I'm putting it on
If I see another glove on the floor I'm putting it on
If I see another glove on the floor I'm putting it on
If I see another glove on the floor
The doors open wide and I stomp and I stride
To the ward with the bag full of stuff
Some mittens and hats and this thing and that
That we thought might all be enough
A sock monkey sewn before the boy's grown
By an auntie we know he will love
And I'll hold him and I'll keep him warm
Like a hand in a glove
