BROAD DAYLIGHT
Dreamt about an old girlfriend from not too long ago
On the tip of my tongue were all the things i now profess to know
But city wide the stakes were high and my back could barely bend
To pick up all the pieces that blow where the trade winds send
I found mercy mild, far and wide, in town halls and county fairs
But cracked my head and stumbled down your fifth floor walk up stairs
If the joke's on us, we're last to know the end is coming soon
So let's play dead and lie upon a highway in the afternoon
Because I'm a sinner and a saint
And when you pretend to try
There is a glimmer so faint
Like the moon in broad daylight
Is it so strange I make the clearest path towards the shyest one?
Who trails off in mid reverie just staring at the white hot sun
There's much to say, the do or dying nature now preserved
And if my mind's eye would bat a lash, my should would sure be stirred
But the joke's on us, we're last to know the end is coming soon
So let's play dead and lie upon a highway in the afternoon
Because I'm a sinner and a saint
And when you pretend to try
There is a glimmer so faint
Like the moon in broad daylight
