Billie Jean is the second single
from Jackson's sixth solo album, Thriller.
There are contradictory claims to what the song's lyrics refer to. One suggests that they are derived
from a real-life experience, in which a female fan claimed that Jackson had fathered one of her twins.
However, Jackson himself stated that "Billie Jean" was based on groupies he had encountered
during the Jackson 5 days.
• This song won 2 1984 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song & Best Male Vocal Performance (R&B).
• The song was mixed 91 times by audio engineer Bruce Swedien before it was finalized.
• The single was released on January 2nd, 1983, certified platinum by the RIAA, and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart & the Billboard (R&B) Soul Singles chart.
• Michael debuted 'the moonwalk' while performing this song live at the (1983) Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever television special.
Michael shot a Pepsi commercial in 1984 performing a reworked version of Billie Jean
entitled "Pepsi Generation". During the shoot, his hair caught fire from the pyrotechnics
and he was rushed to the hospital.
The incident left the singer in need of reconstructive surgery.
The commercial premiered at the Grammys, where Jackson wore a hairpiece to cover his burns
as he collected a record eight awards.
