You know, today is a very special day.
For the first time this year, I'm putting snow in the forecast.
Snow always makes me so excited and people say, "you know, why does,
What does snow make you think of? What gets you excited?" And,
As far as what snow makes me think of
Things like forgiveness, the grace that makes us new, and the entire gospel and baptism come to mind.
When we're baptized,
Going into the water symbolizes death to our old self.
We're covered by the water to show how we've been washed clean
And covered by what Jesus did for us on the cross.
Then, coming out of that water, we are a new creation in Christ.
Every fall, the plants turn colors and die.
In the winter, they're covered by snow.
As that snow is absorbed into the ground, it provides what's needed to be made new,
As they grow as new creations in the spring.
But, even more so,
Without the snow, the seeds don't get the nutrients they need to thrive in the spring and they struggle.
The snow protects the plants from being harmed by the harsh elements of the winter,
Just like the gospel protects us from the harsh penalty of our sin.
Without the gospel, our death is permanent
And we struggle with the concept of being made new.
Likewise, without snow in the winter,
The death of a lot of plants is permanent,
And they struggle to grow new in the spring.
Snow is the presence of God bringing grace, forgiveness, and nutrients into my life,
That makes me fresh and new,
Just like the snow literally gives to the ground beneath my feet.
