Five minutes and I'll make it to the edge of town
Watch the odometer slowly drag around
This place is like a shipwreck
Flooding on the rolling plain
Or what you might find around a dirty drain
I didn't listen to the lessons of the open road
I thought my decision was my only load
And now I'm like a seabird
High above a desert highway
One wing to land one to fly away
Because I'm bent to wander
Don't know why but I just keep driving
With little left to squander
So quick to leave
So slow arriving
Like everything I thought could be
Like ghosts of sailors lost at sea
I've got to wonder what I thought I'd leave behind
When I know that it'll find a way to catch me blind
It's like a hometown done up like it's in a dream
Streets full of people who know more than they seem
And they'll be waiting like a flock upon the hill
Looking from a distance like an accidental spill
Spilled down, fallen from the cup of God
When I came back home, they'll be there to applaud
I was bent to wander
I don't know why but just kept driving
So little left to squander
So quick to leave
So slow arriving
Like everything I thought could be
Like ghosts of sailors lost at sea
