The Old 97 was a train that ran for the Southern Railway.
It was better known as The Fast Mail, because of its reputation as a
lightning-fast mail train that never came in late.
The wreck of the Old 97 happened
on September 27th, 1903 when the train was an hour behind, it was asked
to speed up, resulting in unsafe speeds and a subsequent derailment.
It plunged into a ravine at the Stillhouse Trestle near Danville,
resulting in the deaths of
9 people, including the conductor.
