I can feel it slipping
An unexpected bloom, a gift
The hairs on the nape of my neck stand up
There's that dizzying, ears-back, tightening feeling
It's formless like the passenger who's seen it all before
This time though I can't line it up, I can imagine where it goes.
The contrast fades, the creases lie, and everything I've been chasing fades away
When the running slows, I'm not sure what's left
When the fighting goes, I'm lost and out of breath
When the struggle dies, I melt into the pavement
And I watch you, and I feel you walk away
Flying down the sidewalk
To the undeveloped lot across the street
There's a creek left running and enough ways down
You could still find God with one headlight out
Up the dirt hill, if you hold on, there's a open field with a half-paved road
To a black hole & a simple life & a home where the good ones go when they die
But in the best case, you won't find God, you're just driving circles around your neighborhood
Yeah, and everything you've been chasing fades away
When the running slows, I'm not sure what's left
When the fighting goes, I'm lost and out of breath
When the struggle dies, I melt into the pavement
And I watch you, and I feel you walk away
