The Random Hubiak Band - Floating Empties Lyrics

The Random Hubiak Band - Floating Empties Lyrics
Official

The old railroad trestle's in a state of disrepair
The tracks have long since been abandoned
Kids sit and drink there now, drop their bottles in the water
Watch the empties floating down to the old landing
Back in its heyday, I'll be this town was sure something
I'll bet it was amazing as Hell
Steel barges in the river, factory smokestacks rising
Crude pouring out of every well
Now everything is frozen like the whole damned town is dead
And I am stuck here at this signal: there's no turn allowed on red
No, there's not another vehicle. There's nobody else in sight
I'm just stuck here, parked in Purgatory, waiting on a light, waiting on a light
Well this whole town is dying. You can see it in folks' eyes
Though there's few here that's quite ready to admit it
It's grab at what you can and hold to what you got
Do what it takes to put off 'til you've got to quit it
I've learned to travel solo; I've learned to hunt in packs
To tread lightly and be stealthy as a raptor
I do your bidding gladly, and I cover up my tracks
Or be called remorseless killer bringing what you've asked for
Now everything is frozen like the whole damned town is dead
And I am stuck here at this signal: there's no turn allowed on red
No, there's not another vehicle. There's nobody else in sight
I'm just stuck here, parked in Purgatory, waiting on a light, waiting on a light
And the world still goes on somewhere. I am certain this is true
But I am pawning my belongings in threadbare denim and worn shoes
Each day's another replay of VHS, some faded tape
Where the image gets degraded but the actors can't escape
And when another day is ended, we hit rewind and play once more
Not even wondering where the scenes were left out on the cutting floor
Someday this will be static. Someday we'll be forgot
And even future archaeologists won't ponder at our lot; they won't ponder at our lot
Once I was hopeful in spite of this place
It gave me someplace to think I could run away from
Life throws you curves like this river shapes this valley
And some just lead you back to where you came from
At eighteen, your were late, and so I joined the union
Not long after, the manufactory closed
You lost the child. I stayed out of guilt
That's all that mattered, I supposed
Let's climb up on that trestle, throw back a few in silence
You're still lovely. Some of my swagger still remains; we
Can watch the sun slip down behind the hills, let go our bottles
Watch the empties float on down the Allegheny
