It wasn't always easy back when I was growing up
We didn't have no luxuries and often times were tough
Along the way I learned a thing or two about this life
And to never ever ask a fool for some advice
I learned the hard way to take responsibility
I learned the hard way the fact that freedom is not free
There were challenges adversity I've been lonely and dismayed
What got me where I am today I learned the hard way
In the Bible Jesus said to seek and you will find
But I found distractions always occupied my mind
Thank God I saw the dead end road that I was on
And looking back I see the precious time that's come and gone
I learned the hard way to take responsibility
I learned the hard way to finally face reality
Prolonged adolescence was the foe I had to slay
What got me where I am today I learned the hard way
And I know how it feels to lose somebody that you love
And in desperation to call out to the Lord above
To not have much money and wonder how you will get by
And to feel so hopeless what's the use to even try
I learned the hard way to take responsibility
I learned the hard way to appreciate our liberty
And to be thankful that there is a country called the USA
And not to care what people say I learned the hard way
And I'm thankful I live in the country called the USA
And I don't care what people say I learned the hard way
I learned the hard way
