New York City I give up
I'm tired of your complaining
You keep besting all the stars
You keep the rest of us in training
And it's always raining wishes
It's never really clear
Why is everybody dying
Dying to live here?
New York you have fed me
The fruits of distant labor
Sacrificed me to your G-d
Got me praying for the future
You're a cold and distant island
You're a nation all your own
You're a concrete lover with a heart made of stone
But where else can you find a good meal,
Take a train, make a deal at four am?
In this city of strangers you are always my friend
New York City you have raised me
Like any other
There was laundry on the fire escape
Roaches in the cupboard
And in the summer we played stickball
Pitched our hearts against your wall
We stayed out all night
'cause our apartments are too small
And while the Needle Park prophets
Sing the tales of their addiction
The grey suit killers fix their minds to their income
Where the greatest artists came
To get their little bit of fame
Endless starving artists have been doing just the same
The stories keep coming, new faces in a stream
Like endless mutations, variations on a theme
In this sleepless city you are my favorite dream
New York you will always be
The first to see this sun
And if it's not happening here
It might as well not get done
Silent trees will fall
In the South and in the West
But this place is not for quitters
It's only for the best
And New York I always hoped
It wouldn't end up this way
But in the back of my head
I knew it would some day
Even if I leave
The better part of me is gonna stay
So I guess the only way to beat you is to not walk away
And of all the other cities in all the countries of this world to live and die
To strive, to really make it....just barely.
New York City you're the place for me.
