I remember the house you bought
Looking out on alfalfa fields
And the acre in the back
With that beautiful garden
Rows of zucchini and corn
Trees full of apples, pears, and plums
Shoots of peas and carrots grew like weeds
Late September's harvest was a boon
Oh, Sevier Gardens
Are you doing fine?
Oh, Sevier Gardens
Where's the breaking line?
At the start of spring
We tilled the soil and planted seeds
But summer's heat shriveled sprouts
And costs you weren't prepared to mount
Year after year the garden atrophied
Crops were lost to pests and agonies
The bounty of a Platonic ideal
Had lost its primitive appeal
Oh, Sevier Gardens
Are we doing fine?
Oh, Sevier Gardens
Where's the breaking line?
I was looking at a photograph
Of myself as a child
And was struck by my malnourished eyes
You were never taught to raise a child
Or to tend a garden properly
