Katie was the first of us to make it
Dhe cut her hair - I followed down the tracks
With a little food and a baseball bat for practice
We carried everything upon our backs
We'd walk the edge of every town we came to
Till nothing was left open but the bars
Then we'd sit awhile and watch the twilight dwindle
Until we fell asleep under the stars
They hover far above our indiscretions
They twinkle from a place we can't conceive
And you can beg and you can plead for their protection
But a little light is all that you'll receive
They caught us half a mile out of Lakeland
Katie ran so fast they didn't have a chance
Well they cuffed me quick and tossed me in the back seat
And I begged and cried, o please don't take me back
An hour gone is an hour of aching
I just paced the cell and imagined the sky
Outside the crickets called out for each other
Looking for a friend to help them pass the time
Now the school is gone and the church is boarded over
And Muffler King has muffled its last car
Four decades on there's nothing left to see here
And sympathy won't carry you too far
You can keep your prayers, I only need the stars
