When I was a young man
I left my home
For the desert, to fight a war
They trained me up too fast
Put a rifle in my hands
Showed me the enemy, asked if I's a man
The water was dirty
The food taste like ass
I survived off a whiskey and afghan hash
They said I wasn't fit
Shipped me back to alabam
Where folks is much more grateful, but just don't understand
To assume that I'm a hero, we would've had to win
You can thank me for my service, when you've been where i've been
When you shake my hand and smile at me, it's a politician's grin
Just leave me be, "we are free" and we can just be friends
That all happened years ago
And time it sure goes fast
When drugs are the throttle, and whiskey is the gas
My gears they are a-grindin'
As i put it to the floor
And when my tank gets empty, I c'mon back for more
To assume that I'm a hero, we would've had to win
You can thank me for my service, when you've been where I've been
When you shake my hand and smile at me, it's a politician's grin
Just leave me be, "we are free" and we can just be friends
