My friend Jack sat at the back
Of the class with me at school
Living for kicks
And up to his tricks
He would always play the fool
Taken down bunked off into town
With our bikes chained to the fence
Running around and acting the clown
A disruptive influence
My Friend Jack was the joker in the pack
And I know when I look back as I recall
Jack would smile like he knew that all the while
There was more to life than exercise book scrawl
Laughed out loud and hung with the crowd
Quite appealing and mysterious
Lit up a smoke
And laughed at his jokes
Never took himself too serious
Five years passed it happened so fast
When I moved out of the neighbourhood
Amp and guitar in the back of his car
Misanthropic and misunderstood
That Jack he was the joker in the pack
And I know when I look back as I recall
Jack would smile like he knew that all the while
There was more to life than pool and pub room brawls
It was years later on a train I ran into an old friend
Talked about the old days In the quadrangle
We thought they'd never end
My Friend Jack stopped me in my tracks
By the clock at Euston station
Wearing a suit was late for a shoot
Handed me an invitation
That was jack as he slapped me on the back
Told me never to look back as I recall
Jack would smile like he knew that all the while
There was more to life than pride before a fall
