The laughter's louder than it ought to be
Empty cans and tired eyes stare back at me
We joke about the future like we believe
But the red keeps rising on the old TV
And the red starts spreading across the map
The jokes fall flat, and nobody claps
We all ran out of things to say
Words deserted us, hope fades away
The circus is on, and no one's laughing
The clown's got the spotlight, our smiles are cracking
The beer's gone bitter, someone sighs
Hope slips through like smoke in the night
And the room's gone cold, the jokes are dry
Holding candles to a starless sky
We lost again, but we just sit
Silent as hope takes the final hit
One by one, my friends all leave
Their faces fading into the street
The TV's off, the silence loud
The kind that smothers, keeps you bowed
I stand alone in stale, thick air
Laughter long gone, only despair
The room is empty, silence is thick
The world keeps turning, but I don't feel it click
The words have hollowed out, the hope is thin
The jokes have left, and darkness settles in
I look out the window, the street is bare
No one cheering, no lights anywhere
Just an empty room in a city asleep
And our laughter, gone and incomplete
